CINCINNATI (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned doctors not to prescribe Viagra to patients taking nitroglycerine because it could cause a potentially fatal heart attack.
The FDA said it's considering a label review for a class of medications called “selective phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.” It says a generic version of the medication,, could lead to heart attacks and strokes in some patients taking it.
The FDA said a generic version of Viagra, which is marketed under the name “Viagra Super Force,” could increase the risk for heart attacks and strokes, though experts are not sure whether the drug is safe for use in these patients.
“This is a serious and potentially fatal interaction,” the agency said in its final analysis.
The agency said Viagra Super Force is not approved for use in patients with heart disease or those with a condition that can lead to heart attack or stroke.
The FDA is considering a label review of two drugs marketed as Viagra and Cialis to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“These drugs are not approved for use in patients with heart disease or heart failure, and they have not been shown to be safe or effective in patients with these conditions,” the agency said.
The FDA said it's also considering other drugs that could interact with Viagra Super Force, such as some anti-hypertensive drugs and certain antidepressants.
“This review is notifying our pharmacy staff that Viagra Super Force, a generic drug product, may increase the risk of a potentially fatal heart attack or stroke,” the FDA said in a statement.
